As well as its twinning arrangements, West Lothian also has a number of less formal transnational relationships.
Ida-Viru region, Estonia
Over recent years, there have been a series of visits between WLC and representatives of Ida-Viru - the latest was in June 2008. There has been particular interest in the regeneration of West Lothian's economy following the demise of heavy industry - a situation now relevant to Estonia. The most recent Estonian delegation came to discuss West Lothian's plans for the rural development fund, LEADER, a European funding stream that West Lothian and Ida-Viru have in common. A delegation from WLC to Ida-Viru is scheduled for Summer 2009.
For more information about Ida-Viru, visit the area's website at www.ida-viru.ee (in Estonian only but good images) or Enterprise Estonia's website for general information about Estonia www.eas.ee (in English).
China
Links between the West Lothian Chamber of Commerce and the Tianjin region of China have been strengthened over recent years. West Lothian has been keen to develop links with China and USA as the world's largest economies and the most recent move forward in this relationship with China has been a visit to West Lothian from Chinese government and business leaders in May 2006. A return trip is planned.
Dublin (South), Ireland
In view of the Dublin area's similarity to West Lothian, a strong relationship has been developed between the two regions since 2000. West Lothian Chamber has led the development of this relationship and has signed a concordat with Dublin's Chamber, as well as maintaining regular visits to award ceremonies and events in both West Lothian and Dublin.
