Case Studies

Community Bus project

As LEADER projects come on stream we will highlight some of these. Currently, 35 projects have been awarded funding from West Lothian LEADER and we introduce them below and the amount of LEADER grant awarded.

The projects are part-funded through LEADER funding - on the condition that they have match funding in place from other public and private sources. The projects below should be seen as models of good practice. Your project proposal should essentially be your own idea and not necessarily replicate them.

 

Community Chest Grant Scheme

The project provides grant support to small scale local projects delivered through local voluntary sector organisations. It aims to build organisational capacity by assisting in the early stage development of community sector organisations thereby strengthening rural communties and local capacity to develop and manage regeneration initiatives. Grant awarded £20,000

Reach Out - West Lothian Women's Aid

West Lothian Women's Aid (WLWA) award enabled them to establish an outreach worker who will provide support to women who are experiencing or have experienced domestic abuse. The worker reached out into the rural communities to offer a range of appropriate services. The organisation is applying for further funding to develop the project further. www.wlwa.org.uk Grant awarded £25,000

Celebrating our Shale Oil Heritage

Innovative museum outreach project that aims to involve groups and individuals living in former shale mining communities in the recording and celebration of their industrial heritage. The work support local interests in recording memories and surviving heritage of the shale industry, in conducting historical research, and in organising exhibitions and workshops. Grant awarded £22,400

Winchburgh Connected

Range of services and agencies working in the Winchburgh area that have been working together through the locality planning process to address need. Through this process and through a number of community engagement and involvement exercises, a range of issues has been identified, which need to be addressed. Such issues include: a lack of opportunities for young people and young parents, and barriers such as poor transport to access services and job opportunities in other towns in West Lothian. Grant awarded £18,500

Maximising Support to Rural Tourism Businesses

Specialised business support to enable local rural tourism firms to grow and succeed. A dedicated rural tourism business advisor will drive the project forward; and deliver workshops, one-to-one support and a project end evaluation. Grant awarded £18,000

BTCV Scotland/Polkemmet Country Park

BTCV, an environmental charity, propose to regenerate Polkemmet Country Park in a sustainable way by encouraging community volunteering and improving skills and confidence in environmental, community and health activities through a series of practical environmental activities and training opportunities. Grant awarded £5,000

Armadale Unique Youth Space

Providing a 'hub' that young people will want to attend; clubs, workshops and educational sessions in response to young people's needs; and other youth related services to engage and support young people. www.armadale.org.uk/youth.htm Grant awarded £42,100

Fauldhouse Community Hub

Fauldhouse Community Development Trust bought and refurbishished a self-sustaining Community Hub to enable them to bring improved access to services and facilities in Fauldhouse and to help them get more actively involved in regenerating their community. New community facilities will be developed for use by a variety of groups, including young people and those who find it hard to travel to access important services. Grant awarded £46,400

Stoneyburn and Breich Valley Employability Project

A drop-in and advice service which has been in operation in Stoneyburn since 2005 has after consultation with young people and the community learned that there are concerns about the needs and services available for young people. In particular, the concerns of those that struggle with mainstream education, who are unemployed and finding transition into adulthood difficult. In support, projects have been devised to provide: a safe and non-threatening environment that young people will want to attend; workshops and educational sessions that will respond to their needs; and a signposting service to enable uptake of specialised services, for example, Access2Employment and health services. Grant awarded £19,900

Ecclesmachen & Uphall Paths Improvement

The project will reinstate local walks around Binny Craig and between Uphall, Longmuir and Ecclesmachan.  This should meet the need for safe and accessible walking routes in the Ecclesmachan/Uphall areas that will enhance the current core path plan and provide important linkage to longer East/West and North/South paths in the region. Grant awarded £2,600

Fauldhouse & Breich Valley Home Energy Service

The project will carry out 300 home energy projects; assist residents in tackling fuel poverty and reducing CO2 emissions.  Grant Awarded £18,000

Equestrian Tourism Study

Researched report delivered on the opportunities for the development of horse based tourism in the east of the Central Scotland Forest (West Lothian & Falkirk local authority areas).  Now delivering workshops and looking at the second phase project.  http://www.csft.org.uk/news/512_equestrian-visits-action-plan-workshop Grant awarded £2,600

Loganlea Miners Welfare - Refurbishment of Village Hall

Fauldhouse Community Development Trust bought and refurbished a building to create a self-sustaining Community Hub to enable them to bring improved access to services and facilities in Fauldhouse and to help them get more actively involved in regenerating their community. Oatridge Workforce Development Project

Oatridge College aims to create 20 new employment opportunities over a period spanning one year in conjunction with the Future Jobs Fund. These posts will each last six months and will incorporate job-specific training and employability and core skills training. For example, there will be job opportunities in estates maintenance, stables & riding assistance and the Equestrian Centre. Grant awarded £37,000

Fauldhouse Forest Employability Project

This partnership initiative was developed by Fauldhouse Development Trust, West Lothian Council - Community Regeneration, West Lothian Council - Access2employment, the Forestry Commission and JobcentrePlus. The project offers paid training opportunities for long-term unemployed young people to work in forestry. Trainees carry out enhancements  to woodland areas in the Fauldhouse area. This will assist in the promotion of the use of the woodland area by the community. Grant awarded £62,000

Rural Outreach Counsellor for young people

Managed by West Lothian Council's Children and Families team, this project provides a young person's counselling service (in the field of mental health) within local communities. Counselling is not a statutory service. However, providing such a service through the Rural Outreach Counsellor project should increase availability to young people who may not have access to transport. Grant awarded £28,000

Blackburn & Seafield District Credit Union

An ongoing project, the Credit Union is developing accessibility for local people through opening new collection points, including the local library and introducing primary school collection. Grant awarded £36,000 

On-Line Grants Database

Provides two on-line grant databases to enhance existing internal and external funding advice and guidance. You can access the database here. Grant awarded £3,800

Battle of Linlithgow Bridge Trail

Linlithgow Heritage Trust are developing a battlefield trail which commemorates the Battle of Linlithgow Bridge in 1526. The project is currently upgrading the existing memorial cairn and providing interpretation/information panels on the historic battle. www.bolb.org.uk Grant awarded £5,800

 

Country Parks Employability Programme

This project has been developed to make a practical and significant impact on the challenge of tackling youth unemployment. It will create 30 new employment and training opportunities based on rural land-based skills and linked to DWP Future Jobs Fund Initiative. The project will make improvements to the infrastructure of West Lothian's three Country Parks - Beecraigs, Polkemmet and Almondvale & Calderwood - and to encourage access. Grant awarded £130,000

Harperrigg Reservoir Interpretation Plan

The aim is to improve public access and interpretation around the Harperrigg reservoir and encourage its use as an educational resource. Grant awarded £2,635
