Over the last four years (Oct 2004 - Oct 2008), reported monthly vacancies in West Lothian have fallen from a high of 2,023 vacancies in October 2004 to a low of 1,144 in October 2006, followed by another high of 2,000 in October 2007 and perceptible levelling off by October 2008 (Figure 1). This would indicate that the local economy has as yet registered no significant sign of economic downturn despite recessional movements in the national economy. In October 2008, there were 1,837 vacancies notified by industry, this was a net fall of 8.2% on the previous year (Figure 2). The annual pattern of seasonal highs and lows in notified vacancies is reflected in the trend experienced in last five years.
