Population

Results from the 2001 census show that West Lothian is the youngest and fastest growing population in Scotland. Recent large-scale investment in the area has resulted in new employment, new housing and ultimately a growing population.

West Lothian currently has a population of about 169,510 (ONS mid-2008 population estimates), an increase of about 1.0% on the previous mid-year estimate.

  • West Lothian shared fifth position, with Aberdeenshire and Moray, in having the largest population increase amongst Scottish Council areas
  • The main cause of population change in the year to mid-2008 was natural change
  • Net migration for West Lothian was 836 persons

Further information on population and population change can be found on the General Register Office for Scotland site.
