Economic Activity

West Lothian has traditionally had higher than average economic activity levels. There has been a culture of a significant number of school leavers choosing to go straight into the labour market (19.4% of West Lothian's school leavers went directly into employment in 2009/10 compared to 18.5% for Scotland). This, coupled with a younger than average population, explains why activity levels are relatively high in West Lothian.

Economically Active

The latest economic statistics to June 2012 show that West Lothian has higher rates of economic activity than Economically active table July 2011-June 2012 Scottish rates for working age people who are either in-employment or those who want to work but are not employed. As the table shows, 78.1% of the population of West Lothian are economically active (versus 77.1% rate for Scotland) and 74.3% are in some form of employment (70.9% for Scotland).

N.B. Economically active people are those who are either in employment or unemployed, aged 16-64
