Fairtrade Linlithgow

Linlithgow's commitment to Fairtrade goes back to 1994 when the Linlithgow Oxfam Group started to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight each year with window displays and stalls in supermarkets. Through craft fairs, coffee mornings, fashion shows, special events in schools and visits from producers who have benefited from Fairtrade, Linlithgow achieved its Fairtrade Town status in January 2004, confirming the towns commitment to Fairtrade. This awarded status indicates two things:
  • First, local people understand what Fairtrade means to producers, and care enough to use the products and support suppliers.
  • Second, a local group exists to help maintain and strengthen the interest in Fair trade.

The Linlithgow group, now called the Linlithgow Fairtrade Partnership, is a well-established forum that meets every few months, ensuring that Fairtrade remains high on the local agenda.

Linlithgow Fairtrade Activities

Feb 08 -The Partnership served a Fairtrade breakfast to the Linlithgow & Linlithgow Bridge Town Management Group.  A couple of weeks later they ran a stall at the February Farmers Market where they told shoppers all about the importance of Fairtrade.

Feb 07 - The Fairtrade Partnership pulled out all the stops at last years Fairtrade Fortnight. At an exciting event on the 1st of March in Linlithgow Academy, there was something for everyone. Visitors were welcomed with a glass of Fairtrade wine or juice and were spoilt by the range of home baking on offer - all Fairtrade of course! There were a range of stalls selling fairly traded products including clothing, silk paintings, hand crafted cards and jewellery. There was also fantastic musical entertainment from the schools rock band, complimented by the West Lothian Youth Theatre who had devised a series of short sketches that they performed for the delighted audience. These sketches explained how unfair trade can negatively impact the lives of millions of people and how Fairtrade can empower them to work for a better life.

October 06 - The partnership set up a Fairtrade stall at the Linlithgow Farmers Market. They used the opportunity to tell people more about the Fairtrade movement, and to also let them sample Fairtrade chocolate, coffee, tea and other goodies!
