The Inland Revenue can help with all your tax questions when you set up your business. If you are planning on being self employed they can help you with Self Assessment and Tax Credits. They can also help you work out whether you are employed or self employed which can be confusing especially if you intend to keep working for another employer while you start up your own business. If you intend to employ other people they can help you through the process of registering as an employer and assist you with the required paperwork. Customs & Excise
UK Customs and Excise is a Government department with responsibility for collecting billions of pounds in revenue each year in VAT, other taxes and customs duties. It can affect your business in many ways notably with regard to VAT but also if you import or export goods, buy or sell products on the internet or run any gambling related business. They also assist businesses in preventing money laundering activities and from 2007/2008 will administer Road Usage charges for Lorries.
