Direct Debit
This is a simple, safe and convenient way to pay your Non Domestic Rates. You also have the security given by the Direct Debit Guarantee: - This guarantee is offered by all Banks and Building Societies that take part in the Direct Debit Scheme. The efficiency and security of the scheme is monitored and protected by your own Bank or Building Society.
- If the amounts to be paid or the payment dates change West Lothian Council will notify you 10 working days in advance of your account being debited or as otherwise agreed.
- If an error is made by West Lothian Council or your Bank or Building Society, you are guaranteed a full and immediate refund from your branch of the amount paid.
Previously we only administered one payment date, we are pleased to announce that as a result of customer feedback we have now added an additional date. The Direct Debit payment dates available are the 15th of the month and the last working day of the month. You can cancel a Direct Debit at any time by writing to your Bank or Building Society. Please also send a copy of your letter to us. If you are not currently taking advantage of the safety of paying your Non Domestic Rates by Direct Debit then please contact us as you can set up a Direct Debit over the telephone. Alternatively, you can click here to download our Direct Debit instruction which we would ask you to complete and return to us.

Paying your rates on time
You must pay your rates as instructed to in your bill. If you have not paid at least four of your monthly instalments by 30 September 2008 you will lose your right to pay by instalments. Also, if you fall two or more months behind with your instalments after 30 September 2008 you will lose your right to pay by instalments. If you have chosen to pay your bill in one instalment then you must make this payment by 1 October 2008. If you do not then you will lose your right to pay by instalment.

Arrears
If you lose your right to pay by instalments the council will send you a Final Notice. You will have 14 days from the date of the notice to pay the rates due for the year. If you do not pay as instructed the council would apply to the Sheriff for a Summary Warrant. A penalty of ten percent of the balance due will then be added to your account.
