New economic strategy launched to accelerate local recovery

Tue, Aug 10 2010

An updated strategy for West Lothian's economy has been published by the West Lothian Economic Partnership.

The economic strategy for 2010-2020 maps out how the Partnership plans to build a strong economic future based on the success of the last ten years.

The document sets out West Lothian's economic priorities, building on key themes identified in the Scottish Government's economic strategy.

The new strategy comes at a time when the global economy has been through an unprecedented recessionary period. The key priority is therefore to support the acceleration of recovery in West Lothian.

Although there are signs that growth may be slowly returning, accurate forecasts are difficult and the strategy must be flexible. Partners acknowledge that they must be prepared to refocus priorities when new opportunities arise or if unexpected barriers appear.

The strategy focuses on three key strategic drivers: Developing the business base; Maximising West Lothian's competitiveness as an investment location; and Realizing the potential of young people.

Economic Partnership actions are grouped around four themes - Enterprise and Business Development; People and Skills; Business Infrastructure, Regeneration and Visitor Assets; and Inclusion.

Martyn Day, executive councillor for development and transport, said: "In West Lothian we have built a reputation for enterprising behaviour. Our economic history is one of adapting to change and driving hard out of difficult times like these. As public sector funding will be at a premium for some time, this strategy focuses on hard priorities that will help to shape our economy towards a positive future.

"West Lothian's economic partners will continue to vigorously pursue the core challenge of growing and strengthening the West Lothian economy."
