BT has announced that the Livingston Station exchange, covering west Livingston, will be upgraded this year to allow super fast fibre optic broadband to be rolled out.
The new fibre optic based broadband services will be available from summer 2010 and will offer speeds of up to 50Mbps for existing homes through so called Fibre to the Cabinet ( FTTC) and speeds of up to 100Mbps to new properties with Fibre Optic cables to the Home / Premises (FTTH/P). It is the first exchange in West Lothian to be upgraded as part of BT's £1.5bn programme to deliver next generation services into 10 million homes (40% coverage) by 2012. Livingston Station is also the only exchange in West Lothian currently able to offer BT ADSL2+ Broadband with speeds of up to 24Mbps. This service is due to be rolled out to the Bathgate exchange in March 2010. ADSL2+ Broadband is also available through 02/Be at the eight West Lothian exchanges with Local Loop Unbundling (LLU). These are Armadale, Bathgate, Broxburn, Linlithgow, Livingston Bridge , Livingston Station, Midcalder and Whitburn. All 14 exchanges in West Lothian currently offer ADSL Max broadband of up to 8Mbps depending on distance from the exchange and most households in West Lothian can now access broadband services. The new FTTC programme will particularly help those households located more than 1.5 km from the exchange, improving their available broadband speeds dramatically.
