A short lunchtime presentation for local businesses is planned by West Lothian's Adult Basic Education Service.
The presentation aims to offer solutions to employers who are concerned about how poor numeracy and literacy skills may be limiting the ability of their workforce to develop within their company - and possibly even impacting on staff turnover. One in five small businesses think the British workforce is poorly skilled, and half of these think the workforce is so poorly skilled it affects the bottom line, according to a survey by the Forum of Private Business. The research showed that companies even had problems finding staff with basic attributes such as communication, numeracy and literacy. Businesses can choose from one of two dates to come along to the presentation over a free sandwich lunch - Thursday 13 November or Monday 8 December. Elaine Nisbet, of West Lothian Council's Adult Basic Education Service, has organized the meetings as part of West Lothian's Business4Growth project, which provides a co-ordinated range of training and development for local businesses through a partnership between West Lothian Council, West Lothian College and West Lothian Chamber of Commerce. In her presentation she will discuss the 'unseen' literacy and numeracy skills needed in the workplace, the latest research and development influencing practice in adult literacy and numeracy and the help and support available to local businesses. The presentations will take place at the Enterprise Centre, Almondvale Boulevard, Livingston EH54 6QP. To book, telephone on 01506 777400 or e-mail business4growth@westlothian.gov.uk
