The Wester Inch brownfield development on the site of the former British Leyland truck factory is being redeveloped as a new urban community for Bathgate. The site became symbolic of urban decline in Scotland when the former British Leyland/Rover Truck assembly plant, which stood here, became derelict in the 1980's with major job losses. The site stood derelict for two decades.
Developed by Gallagher Estates working closely with West Lothian Council, the project involved land assembly, remediation, community planning and master planning to deliver a sustainable new community which functions as an urban extension to the town. This comprehensive new development will involve the provision of over 2,000 homes together with new employment opportunities to help revitalise the local economy.
Work on the scheme began in 2003 and has been taken forward by a consortium of six developers - Bryant Homes, Charles Church, David Wilson Homes, Persimmon, Strathclyde Homes and the Walker Group. Many homes have been constructed and a new primary school - Simpson Primary, named for Sir James Young Simpson, will open in August 2007.
