Environmental 'Best Practice' Case Studies

West Lothian Companies are benefiting from turning waste into profit. These case studies showcase the wide range of projects, undertaken by West Lothian companies including environmental partnership projects that the Business Environmental Partnership have undertaken in partnership with West Lothian Business Gateway.

C&J Pittendrigh, Agricultural Contractors - ISO14001

To exceed customer expectations, develop new business opportunities and meet the increasing demand for alternative disposal routes to landfill the company contacted the Enterprise Centre at West Lothian Council. The BEP conducted an Environmental Review and identified areas where improvements could be made.

Caradale Traditional Brick Ltd - Waste Minimisation and Environmental Placement Programme

An initial waste and energy review completed by the BEP found that about 20% of process inputs were wasted. Energy and raw materials constituted the great majority of costs, and improved management of these inputs would greatly improve business competitiveness.

Ethicon - Cutting down on landfill

From wind turbines to wormeries, Ethicon has implemented far-reaching environmental practices at its Kirkton Campus facility in Livingston.

Mitsubishi Electric - Turning waste into profit

A prime example of far-sighted waste management practice, Mitsubishi’s air conditioning systems assembly plant at Houstoun in Livingston prides itself in having turned its waste into profit in the space of one year.

Oatridge College - Water and Effluent Project

Water audits were conducted at Oatridge College as an initial step to tackling rising water and effluent costs. From the analysis and quantification process it was discovered that around £10,000 worth of water was being lost.

Sibbald Ltd - Heating System Analysis and Interest Free Loan Application

The BEP conducted an analysis of the heating requirements at Sibbald and recommended the replacement of an existing, inefficient, electrical heating system that had very high running costs.
