The first West Lothian College opened in Bathgate in 1965 and saw the town and the wider community through periods of economic downturn which resulted in the demise of the heavy engineering sector, the death of British Leyland and the closure of the West Lothian pits. True to its core mission of workforce building, the College responded to the labour market trends of the time and the demands of inward investment by offering bespoke programmes in electronics, mechatronics and ICT. Through its relationships with industry, and in partnership with the Local Enterprise Company and Napier University, the college established the Scottish Advanced Manufacturing Centre (SAMC) to service the training and development needs of the electronics sector.
