6 June 2008 - More than 25,000 extra workers will be needed to fuel demand in the booming Scottish construction industry, which will employ almost a quarter of a million workers by the end of the decade.
The Construction Skills Network report estimated industry demand for 6,310 new staff in Scotland every year until 2010, when the nationwide industry will employ 230,000. The network was set up last year to gauge demand for staff across the construction industry. It predicts almost 350,000 new construction recruits will be needed across the UK by 2010.
Overall Scottish construction output is expected to increase by 8% driven my major projects such as the Stirling-Alloa-Kincardine railway and the first phase of the Edinburgh tram network. Graeme Ogilvy, Scotland manager of CITB-ConstructionSkills, believes that while Scotland was attracting high numbers of people interested in joining the industry, training institutions were not able to address shortages.
