23 June 2008 - The British Computer Society (BCS) is warning that the Government's decision to remove funding for second degrees and degree-level qualifications in IT will deter people from entering a sector already struggling with a shortage of skills. The Government has marked IT as a subject not important to the public interest and has cut the funding for those who already possess a degree-level qualification but want funding to retrain. In future, anyone with a degree-level qualification in another subject, wanting to undertake a computing degree, will have to fund themselves or ask their employer to foot the bill. The BCS believes the costs involved will put off people from retraining.
